A staple venue on the Columbus music scene since the days it was owned by famous local DJ Andy “Andyman” Davis of CD101 (now 102.5), The Tree Bar had a longstanding Open Mic Night that was changing. The previous host, who had brought his own personality and style to the evening, had moved on. The Open Mic would go on, but this was a key crossroads in what it would become.
Creative brief
The owner replaced the host who would focus primarily on attracting singer songwriters as opposed to the open-to-anything format that had previously reigned. In order to appeal specifically to these musicians, I was commissioned to make a flyer that spoke more to them and less to musicians wanting to perform beat poetry, or use pedal stations or keyboards.
The “Instagram look” was all the rage at the time, as the filters harken to more heartfelt days. I let this inform my design and used pictures to tell the story, while letting the copy directly call out to whom we were speaking.
